POWDER COATING FINISHES

25+ Years’ Experience in Powder Coating Finishes

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint, which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating finishes are applied electrostatically then cured under heat or with an ultraviolet light. The powder may be either a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating finishes are mainly used for metals, such as household appliances, aluminum extrusions, drum hardware, automobile, motorcycle and bicycle parts. Advanced technologies now allow other materials like plastics, composites, carbon fiber and MDF (medium density fiberboard), to be powder coated using different methods that require less heat and time. Types of Powder Coating Finishes

Powder coating is categorized as either thermosets or thermoplastics.

Thermoplastic Powder Coating Finishes: This finish becomes liquid and very soft when heated, eliminating chemical bonding. When using this process, the powder coating is reversible and reusable. It is a thicker and more durable finish compared to thermoset coatings. It can be used on a variety of materials including metal, auto parts, refrigerators and much more.

Thermoset Powder Coating Finishes: Vastly different to thermoplastic finish, thermoset powder coating does form a chemical bond once cured, making it impossible to recycle. It is suitable for high heat areas because the bonds prevent the finish from melting. This is a much cheaper option.

Benefits of Using Powder Coatings

Apart from its durability, there are many added benefits to choosing powder coating for metal fabrication.

Environmentally Friendly: It is one of the best options when considering the environmental impact, because it does not release volatile organic compounds. Thermoplastic coating can be reshaped, reused and recycled. Further, our machines spray the powder very accurately with minimal waste. Unlike paint where there is a lot of overspray and waste.

Cost Effective: While you won’t see a price advantage for the upfront cost, the savings comes over time. Because the coating is extremely durable, it will last for many years, unlike paint that is known to chip and wear down very easily.

Long-Lasting, Polished Look: Powder coating finishes repel chemicals, moisture and other elements. This makes it very easy to clean and maintain the finished polished look for years.

Dry Coating Metal Application Process

  1. The first stage is to put the item into our cleaning station, which specializes in stripping oils, dirt, grease and other contaminants that could negatively affect adhesion of the powder coat finish.
  2. Once the parts are properly cleaned, they’re transported to the painting booth. The booth holds two skilled paints who work side by side to powder coat the grounded parts
  3. After the finish has been applied, the parts are ready to be cured. While the product cures in the dry off oven the finish hardens and sets into a durable and visually appealing protective coating.
